Bedfordshire Gala Orchestra
Conductor: Michael Rose
Soloists: Rebecca Bottone and Rachel Nicholls
Bedford Corn Exchange
21 July 2019 7.30 pm
150 musicians of all ages, who were trained through the Bedfordshire Music system over the past 50 years, will gather on 21st July for this grand event.
Michael Rose, doyen of the Bedfordshire music scene, and the conductor of the Bedfordshire Youth Orchestra for 40 years, will helm the concert. The programme includes much-loved music by Elgar, Delibes, Puccini and Mahler. The orchestra will be joined by international opera stars Rebecca Bottone and Rachel Nicholls, both former leading lights of the Bedfordshire Youth Opera.
The programme has been carefully chosen to reflect some of the orchestra’s greatest moments. Michael Rose’s particular affinity with Elgar’s works, many of which the orchestra has performed, led him to choose the sumptuous overture ‘In the South’. Puccini’s luscious and dramatic Intermezzo to Manon Lescaut and the radiant Flower Duet from Delibes are a link to the operatic tradition. Mahler’s first Symphony, known as the Titan, allows full reign to the enormous orchestra, a huge thrill for players and audience alike.
Programme:
- In the South (Alassio) – Edward Elgar
- Intermezzo from ‘Manon Lescaut’ – Giacomo Puccini
- Flower Duet from ‘Lakmé’ – Léo Délibes
- Symphony No. 1 ‘Titan’ – Gustav Mahler.
